Submission to the Select Committee on Intergenerational Housing Inequity
This submission is informed by and aligned with National Shelter’s 2025 Federal Policy Platform and its priority reform agenda. Given the system‐wide nature of Australia’s housing challenges, including their economic dimensions, core social inequities, and the central role of housing‐related safety nets, this submission has been prepared with the assistance of Brendan Berne, economist, former Reserve Bank of Australia banker, and former Australian Ambassador to France. It also draws on the expertise and contributions of National Shelter’s policy and research collaborative groups, its established evidence base, and the lived experience and perspectives of its member organisations and people on low incomes. Key recommendations are summarised below, with further detail provided in Section 13 of this submission.
