National Shelter is committed to ensuring that low-income Australians have access to a home that is affordable, appropriate, safe and secure.
National Shelter was formed in 1975 by housing activists and collectives with the backing of the Whitlam government. There was a view that a national organisation was needed to make change happen.
Since then National Shelter has worked towards every Australian having a safe, secure, and affordable home by influencing housing policy and raising public awareness and action on housing issues. We are a trusted and independent voice.
Our work is made possible by the generosity of our members, donors, and through project funds.
We are a small team with a national impact.

National Shelter is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission.

We acknowledge the traditional owners and custodians of country throughout Australia and their continuing connection to land, sea and community.
