Julia’s reshuffle: keep housing minister in the Cabinet

National Shelter media release — 28 February 2012

Housing peak National Shelter urges Prime Minister Gillard to maintain a Cabinet minister with responsibility for all housing programs.

Last December, National Shelter welcomed the decision to appoint Robert McClelland, MP, as the new Minister for Housing and Homelessness within the Cabinet.

However on the eve of a potential reshuffle, National Shelter stresses that the title of Housing Minister needs to stay in Cabinet — whoever takes on the portfolio.

Chairperson of National Shelter, Adrian Pisarski, is pleased the Labor Government has taken a front foot on housing, and is hopeful good work will not be undone.

‘It is encouraging to see that National Shelter’s long-held position, which is that housing belongs in the Cabinet, has been acted on by the federal government.’

‘It is my hope that regardless of current internal party politics, housing will still be heavily weighted in the Cabinet.’

‘Prime Minister Gillard is right, it’s time to move forward — let’s not undo the good work that has been done in the meantime.’
